“We’re quick to ask God to bless us. But when was the last time we stopped to bless the Lord?”
“Behold, bless the LORD, All you servants of the LORD, Who by night stand in the house of the LORD!” ~ Psalm 134:1
A Call to Continual Worship
How much thought do I really give to the Lord each day? I’d like to think it is more than it often is. As one of His servants, I am called to worship, praise, and bless Him continually. Yet the demands and distractions of life can easily crowd out intentional moments of adoration.
That is why this short psalm is such a timely reminder. Psalm 134 exhorts God’s people to bless the Lord at all times—even through the night—making worship a continual attitude rather than an occasional activity.
Worship is not meant to be limited to a church service, a song, or a special moment. It is a posture of the heart that recognizes God’s greatness and responds with gratitude throughout every season of life.
Worship Through Surrender and Dependence
Psalm 134:2 says:
“Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, And bless the LORD.”
Throughout Scripture, raised hands express dependence, surrender, and reverence before God. They picture a person coming before the Lord with open hands, acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him.
We come to God empty-handed, recognizing our need for His grace, while gladly yielding our lives to His will. True worship is not merely an outward expression; it flows from a heart that has surrendered itself to the Lord.
When we lift our hands in worship, we are declaring that God is worthy, that He is our provider, and that our lives belong to Him.
The Reason We Bless the Lord
Psalm 134:3 gives us the reason for our praise:
“The LORD who made heaven and earth Bless you from Zion!”
Our worship is rooted in who God is. He is the Creator of heaven and earth, the One who sustains all things and the One who faithfully blesses His people.
Every good gift we enjoy has come from His gracious hand. Our salvation, our daily provision, our strength, and every moment we have been given are reminders of His goodness.
What can we possibly offer the One who reigns from heaven? We cannot add to His greatness or increase His glory. But we can give Him what He desires most—a heart that loves Him, a life devoted to Him, and a voice that never grows weary of blessing His holy name.
A Heart That Blesses the Lord
Psalm 134 reminds us that worship is not simply something we do; it is who we are as servants of the Lord. Whether in the sanctuary or in the quiet moments of the night, our hearts should continually turn toward Him in praise.
May we become people who do not simply receive God’s blessings but who continually bless the God who has given us everything.
Lord, teach me to have a heart that blesses You—not only in moments of worship, but throughout every day You give me.
Reflection Questions:
- Is worship a daily attitude I have or just when I’m at church?
- How can I bless the Lord through surrender, gratitude, and obedience on a daily basis?
