Basecamp

BASECAMP – where we rest, GROW and play

Basecamp is an invitation to REST. Rest by the lake in quiet reflection as the sun rises each morning. Rest by night, under a starlit sky, drawing close to Him as you worship together with friends.

We’ll GROW as we come together to know and experience the living God. Author and speaker Alice Matagora will inspire us to explore how what we see and hold onto shapes who we become. Through engaging and meaningful sessions, workshops, Bible studies, and one-on-ones, together we’ll make space to become TRANSFORMED IN HIS IMAGE.

And, we’ll PLAY together. Get ready for lots of fun! Games, excursions, time by the lake – let's play and gaze at His glory!

Featuring

Alice Matagora

Alice Matagora lives in Southern California with her husband RJ, her children Regi (5) and Clementine (3), and her Daisy dog (15). In her free time she enjoys sleeping, eating delicious food, trying new delicious food, being in nature, throwing sticks and rocks in the creek with her kids, silly dancing with her family, working out, and nerdery. Alice has worked with The Navigators in disciplemaking ministry for over 20 years and is currently the Director of Leader Development. She is also a licensed marriage and family therapist. Combining her professional experience, passion for disciplemaking, love of nerding out on statistics, Alice's first book, How to Save the World: Disciplemaking Made Simple, seeks to equip and empower everyday people to make disciples of Jesus wherever they live, work, and play.

Kathleen Selje

Creative and energetic ministry leader, Kathleen has been teaching, loving, and discipling humans of all ages in a variety of contexts for the last few decades. Trained as an elementary educator and campus minister, she is eager to see communities passionate about Jesus. In her free time, you may find Kathleen “twalking” (talking with a friend on the phone while walking), baking or watching a K-drama.

When he's not serving in his role with the Navigators, you can find him playing pickleball or boardgames and spending time with his amazing wife and boys, Hendrika, Elias and Weston.

Rick McCallum

Rick has been hanging around the University of Calgary sharing the gospel with the wonderful students at that place since the late 1900s. Always enthusiastic and keen to meet new people, he counts it a privilege to serve as the campus director of the UofC Navs. If you ever drop by UofC, look for him sitting in the Machall student centre chatting with someone, or over at the squash courts enjoying his favourite sport!

Ron Abarbanel

Ron has been a chaplain with the Navigators since 1992, serving people from many different professions, backgrounds, and family situations. He spent 14 of those years deeply involved in international development and founded a project in Sub-Saharan Africa and then later went on to co-found Venture 2 Impact where he ran projects in India, Romania, Rwanda, and Indonesia. He helped volunteers from Salesforce, Apple, Netflix, Microsoft, IBM, and other companies to use their skills to benefit the disabled, people living in material poverty, people experiencing the effects of war, and children/young adults who had been abandoned.

Ron's personal struggle to make sense of life and faith has pushed him to grapple with big questions and practices in his growth journey that can serve almost anyone. He is empathetic and sensitive to how life can push people towards depression, anxiety, and addictions, and can help develop understanding and practices that will help over time. His first love is in journeying with people who deeply desire a life of meaning and purpose and relational harmony, but who struggle to find it or maintain it.

Ron and his wife Marsha and I have raised 5 children and have a first-hand understanding of the demands of family and the struggles of marriage. They have mentored numerous couples both before and after marriage.
